Quantock Brewery
A little history in their words. Quantock was founded for, the love of beer , back in December 2007. Our technical director and co-founder, Rob first purchased a home brew kit from boots back in the late 70’s. Extremely disappointed that it didn’t produce the quality of beer he desired. Rob a former nuclear head engineer, decide the only thing for it was to build his own it from scratch in his garage. And the rest is history. We originally set ourselves up in a unit tucked away on an industrial park in Wellington, Somerset. 6 years down the line, and it was evident we had outgrown our present premises and was on the more. So, to Bishops Lydeard we moved, a unit 5 times bigger and just 2-minute walk from the West Somerset Railway. Now we had the space we craved to increase capacity, start up a brewery shop and open the doors to our beloved taproom.
They have done a collaboration with Stannary a small brewery in Tavistock, as they are trying to work with smaller breweries, to raise awareness about small niche brewers that started brewing because they love Beer.
History of the Maltings - Tucker’s & The Maltings
The Maltings is an important part of Devon’s Industrial & Agricultural Heritage. Built by Tucker’s, whose origins go back to 1831 – trading as agricultural merchants, seedsman & maltsters.
In 1898, Edwin Tucker’s son, Parnell, choose a section of land next to Newton Abbot Railway station, for the erection of a new 60 quarter Malthouse that would become Tuckers Maltings. This comprised of two germinating floors, production machinery and two kilns at the far end of the building. Work began on its construction in January 1900 and it officially opened for business on Monday the 5th November 1900. The final cost was £8000. A further 50 quarter Malthouse, with three germinating floors and two additional kilns was added between December 1901 and November 1903.It is a testament to Parnell Tucker’s vision that much of the machinery and methods from 1900 continued to be used for over 118 years until the Maltings ceased production in October 2018.
